Times may change.
The quality remains the same.
From little acorns,
mighty oak trees grow. And in the case of Fortnum & Mason, never a
truer word was spoken. 275 years ago, Mr. Mason, who owned a small shop,
went into partnership with his lodger, Mr Fortnum, who worked as a footman
in the Royal Household of Queen Anne. Back in 1707 candles lit the palace
and the candles were replaced every night. Among his "perks",
Mr. Fortnum was given the used candles, which he sold to the ladies of the
household.
The success of this
venture lit the way to a rather bright idea. Mr Fortnum persuaded Mr Mason
to form a partnership and set up a grocery shop, which was probably little
more than a stall in a doorway in Piccadilly, but which cemented the
foundations of an establishment, which this year celebrates its 275th
anniversary and which has, over the years, become the most famous grocery
shop in the world.
Fortnum & Mason
searched countries near and far for delicacies to tempt the palate. And
succeeded in creating a thriving business, patronised by the noble
residents and all who appreciated true excellence. 275 years on, in a
world of fast foods and commercialisation, there are, thankfully, still
those who appreciate excellence and who come from all around the world in
search of some of the most delicious and superbly prepared foods in
existence.
